Getting started · 3 min read
Your first mortgage, one step at a time.
You do not have to understand every mortgage term before you start. Begin with your everyday life: a comfortable payment, cash you want to keep available, and time to ask questions.
Start with a comfortable budget
Leave room for utilities, repairs, savings, and the things that matter to you. A lender’s maximum is not necessarily your personal comfort level.
Prepare, then compare
Organize income and asset records and discuss your plans with a loan officer. Ask what a preapproval does and does not establish. It is not a final loan commitment.
Understand the next stage
Once you find a home, the property, your documents, and the loan terms still need review. Ask what is outstanding before making financial commitments.
Ask: “What should I prepare now, and what can wait until I find a home?”
